No. Unlike traditional tattooing, SMP uses specialised needles and pigments designed to mimic the exact size and shape of a hair follicle. It is a layered approach for 3D realism — most people genuinely cannot tell the difference from a real shaved head.

Most clients rate the discomfort as 2 to 3 out of 10 — much less painful than a traditional tattoo because we only deposit pigment into the upper dermis. Many clients find the process relaxing once they settle in at our Brisbane studio.

SMP is a semi-permanent treatment. Results typically last 4 to 6 years before a quick touch-up session is needed. UV exposure in Brisbane's climate can affect longevity — we recommend SPF 50+ on the scalp.

A standard transformation requires 3 sessions, spaced about 10 to 14 days apart. This allows us to gradually build density and ensure the most natural blend.

Minimal downtime. You may experience slight redness for 24 to 48 hours, similar to mild sunburn. We provide a complete aftercare kit and instructions. Most clients return to work the very next day.

Absolutely. We specialise in FUE and FUT scar camouflage. By depositing pigment into the scar tissue and blending it with surrounding follicles, we can make even prominent surgical scars nearly invisible.

SMP is often called a hair tattoo but the two are very different. Traditional tattoo ink spreads and changes colour over time — often turning blue or green on the scalp. SMP uses specialised pigments formulated specifically for scalp skin, applied at a much shallower depth with micro-needles that replicate the size and shape of real hair follicles. The result is natural, not inky.

Yes. SMP works on all skin tones from fair to very deep skin. Pigment shades are custom-matched to your natural hair colour and skin undertone at every session. Ben has extensive experience working across the full spectrum of skin types and tones. Yes — and most clients do. SMP is designed to complement a shaved or closely cropped head. We recommend using a foil electric shaver rather than a razor blade for the closest result without irritating the scalp. Keeping your hair at a consistent short length blends perfectly with the SMP pigment for the most natural look.

SMP is one of the few hair loss solutions that actually improves as hair loss progresses. If you continue to lose natural hair after your initial treatment, additional sessions can extend the SMP coverage to match. Unlike a hair transplant which relies on donor hair, SMP has no limit — the coverage can always be expanded to meet your changing hairline.

In the week before your session, moisturise your scalp daily and stay well hydrated. Avoid alcohol for 48 hours prior and do not take blood thinners unless medically necessary. On the day, wash your scalp gently with a mild shampoo, eat a full meal before arriving, and wear a loose top that does not need to go over your head. Shave or trim any remaining hair as close to the scalp as possible.

Immediately after your session the pigment sits in the upper skin layers before fully settling. It will look bolder and darker than the final result for the first 10 to 14 days as your skin heals. This is completely normal and part of the process. The pigment softens, lightens and integrates naturally as you heal — the final colour and density only emerges once all sessions are complete.

Some fading between sessions is completely expected and intentional. As your skin heals it forms a thin protective layer over the pigment, which makes the result appear lighter. Each session builds on the healed result of the previous one, creating natural depth and layering. The final colour only appears once all sessions are complete and fully healed. If you are worried — do not be. It is working exactly as it should.

Not in the first four days. During this critical window, sweating creates moisture on the scalp that can affect pigment retention and increase infection risk. After day four, light activity is fine. From day ten you can return to your full exercise routine including heavy training. Swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms should be avoided for a full 30 days after each session.

SMP is a very safe procedure when performed by a certified, experienced artist using professional-grade equipment and pigments. Risks are minimal but can include temporary redness, mild swelling, or in rare cases an allergic reaction to pigment. All needles used are single-use and sterile. A full health questionnaire is completed before every treatment to identify any contraindications. Ben holds a Nouveau Contour Masters certification in micropigmentation.

Yes, SMP can be lightened or removed using laser treatments, though this is rarely needed. The pigment is deposited at a much shallower depth than traditional tattoo ink, which typically makes laser removal easier and more effective than standard tattoos. We encourage all clients to take time with their decision — but in over 100 Brisbane treatments, we have not had a client want a removal.
